Morgan State University’s Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi Earns National Award from The National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society
Students in Spanish Language Studies Program Excel Beyond Classroom
Morgan State University’s Xi Xi Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, has been selected as the recipient of the national Phoenix Award for the academic year 2025-2026. The award is granted to students studying the Spanish language and culture who have demonstrated a year of extraordinary and exemplary chapter activity compared with previous years.
The 2025-26 academic year was a landmark one for the Xi Xi Chapter, marked by a range of notable activities, including a “Mar a Mar” cultural event in October 2025, a “Día de los Muertos” celebration in November 2025, and multiple “La Mesa de Español” low-stakes Spanish conversation sessions, among other events. The sustained and impactful nature of the chapter’s work throughout the year earned this recognition for Morgan State.
“We are the recipients of this national award because of our incredible students. Their unwavering passion and impactful work have spread a deep love for the Spanish language and Afro-Latinx cultural heritage across our campus and far beyond,” said Gonzalo Baptista, Ph.D., associate professor and chapter adviser in the World Languages Program. “They are the true recipients of this recognition."
The Xi Xi Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi at Morgan State University reflects the broad reach of language, culture, and global learning across academic disciplines. Its members represent a diverse range of fields, including social work, political science, sociology, biology, English, health education and philosophy.
Chapter members include Sunshine Day, a doctoral student pursuing a Ph.D. in Social Work; Naomi Madison, a junior majoring in Political Science; Naja Revell, a senior majoring in Sociology; and Selah Brashear, a junior majoring in Biology.
Alumni members include Devin Widner, B.A. in English; Shakiah Perry, B.A. in Health Education; Alana Dixon, B.A. in Political Science; and Malaika Gadsden, founding president and member of the Xi Xi Chapter, who earned a B.A. in Philosophy.
Together, the chapter’s membership demonstrates that the study and appreciation of the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures transcend individual majors, creating connections among students from vastly different academic backgrounds and professional aspirations. As one of several languages offered through Morgan’s World Languages program, students have opportunities to earn a minor and certificates of proficiency, as well as take courses with service-learning and Virtual Exchange components.
Sigma Delta Pi is the only honor society devoted exclusively to students of Spanish at four-year colleges and universities. It is also the largest foreign-language honor society in existence and has been a member of the Association of College Honor Societies since 1966, reflecting its standing among the nation’s leading honor societies. Its mission is to honor those who excel in the study of the Spanish language, literature, and culture; to foster understanding, appreciation, and respect for the peoples, cultures, and societies of the Spanish-speaking world; to honor those who promote a better understanding of its contributions; and to serve its members in support of the society’s goals and ideals.
