Spain Records Highest Ever May Heat-Related Deaths—Health Ministry

(MENAFN) Spain records its highest number of heat-related deaths ever for the month of May, with 101 fatalities linked to high temperatures, according to estimates from the Health Ministry.

The figure marks the highest for May since records began in 2015 and is about 3.6 times higher than the average for the same month over the past decade, according to reports.

A late-May heatwave brings record temperatures across 23 provinces, with Spain’s meteorological agency AEMET noting unusually warm sea temperatures in parts of the Mediterranean and Cantabrian regions.

The data is released as Spain launches its 2026 national heat prevention plan aimed at reducing heat-related illness and deaths.

The Health Ministry says an estimated 27,564 people die from heat-related causes between 2015 and 2025, with 2022 and 2025 among the deadliest years.
