Spain’s PM Pedro Sanchez Condemns Iran War as “Colossal Mistake”
Speaking before parliament, Pedro Sanchez warned of the serious humanitarian, economic, and security implications of the conflict. “This war is a colossal mistake whose humanitarian, moral, economic, and security costs we neither accept nor are willing to pay.”
He argued that the current situation surpasses the scale and impact of the 2003 Iraq war.
"Unfortunately, history repeats itself, but this time not as farce, but as tragedy … instead of Iraq, we have Iran," he said, adding that US President Donald Trump has taken on a role similar to that of former President George W. Bush in pushing for military action.
Sanchez further stressed that the present crisis carries even greater risks. "We are not facing the same scenario as in the illegal war in Iraq. We are facing something much worse with a potential impact that is much broader and much deeper," he warned.
He also explained Spain’s decision to deny the United States access to its Rota and Moron military bases for operations linked to Iran, including refueling missions. “We are a sovereign country that does not want to take part in illegal wars.”
In addition, Sanchez outlined a €5 billion ($5.8 billion) government plan aimed at mitigating the economic effects of the conflict through financial aid, tax relief, and protections for households and businesses, describing it as "the largest social safety net in the entire European Union."
