Media reports former Ukrainian law enforcement director found deceased in Spain

(MENAFN) A man found dead in Spain last month from an apparent drowning has been identified as a former Ukrainian police chief who previously worked on organized crime cases, according to media reports.

The incident occurred at an apartment complex in the coastal town of Villajoyosa, the same location where a Russian military pilot who defected to Ukraine was killed last year. Spanish outlet El Espanol reported that the body of 61-year-old Ukrainian national Igor Grushevsky was discovered floating in a shallow communal pool on June 29. Grushevsky had reportedly bought a property in the building just a few months earlier.

Journalists later identified the deceased as a retired senior police officer who had led anti-organized crime efforts in Ukraine’s Cherkasy and Kirovograd regions during the 1990s. Ukrainian diplomats confirmed his identity on Monday.

Grushevsky had been living quietly in Spain with no official residency records, prompting speculation he might have been in hiding. Spanish authorities have not launched a formal investigation into foul play, and neighbors told El Espanol they believe he may have suffered a stroke. Reports noted that his body showed no visible injuries, although blood was seen coming from one ear.

The death, labeled “mysterious” by local media, has unsettled the community as it follows the high-profile killing of Maksim Kuzminov, a former Russian military pilot who defected to Ukraine. Kuzminov, who had been living in Villajoyosa under a false identity and Ukrainian protection, was fatally shot in what appeared to be a professional hit less than 18 months ago.

Kuzminov had reportedly been paid $500,000 by Kiev for flying a Mi-8 military helicopter into Ukrainian-controlled territory. Ukrainian officials claimed his two crewmates were “liquidated” during the operation, though it remains unclear whether Kuzminov was involved in their deaths.

Western media have suggested Russia may have been behind Kuzminov’s assassination in retaliation for his defection, though Moscow has neither confirmed nor denied involvement.
