EU Introduces Prototype Age Verification App to Protect Minors Online
The new framework outlines how digital platforms should minimize children's exposure to online dangers, including manipulative design elements, cyberbullying, inappropriate content, and unwanted contact. It also clarifies the circumstances under which age checks are necessary—especially on high-risk platforms, such as those hosting adult material.
A central feature of the initiative is the development of an age verification app designed with privacy in mind. According to the EU Commission, the prototype allows users to confirm they are over 18 without sharing sensitive personal data like their birthdate or official ID.
Initial trials of the tool will take place in Denmark, France, Greece, Italy, and Spain. The pilot program will be conducted in collaboration with digital services, including adult content platforms. Depending on trial outcomes, the system may be adjusted for other age requirements or industries, such as alcohol distribution.
This joint effort marks a major milestone in the rollout of the DSA and aims to standardize age verification practices across the EU while preserving user privacy.
"Making sure our children and young people are safe online is of paramount importance to this Commission," said Henna Virkkunen, executive vice president for tech sovereignty, security and democracy. "Platforms have no excuse to be continuing practices that put children at risk."
